Obama's Reverend Problem

We all remember Rev. Jeremiah Wright, the bigoted minister who pastored Barack Obama and his family for 20 some years. I guess we were pretty sure that his O-ness would show the audacity of "nope" and refrain from asking that Chicago icon to say anything during this historic day for fear that Rev. Wrong might use the tax funded inaugural pulpit to drop the ol' "White folk created aids to kill blacks" riff again. But just because he couldn't use his spiritual mentor for the occasion, that didn't mean the new president would be stopped from creating cleric controversy at the inauguration.

Complain if you will about the choice of anti-gay marriage activist Rick Warren's "purpose-driven" opening prayer, when it comes to spiritual space cadets our new commander and chief saved the best for last with Dr. Joseph Lowry's bigot's-bonanza benediction.

When yellow will be mellow? Are you kidding me? Because we all know how crazy those Asians get in their wacky kung fu movies. And when white will embrace right? Well, since whites are the majority in this country and it was their vote that won Barack Obama the presidency . . . maybe he had a point with that one.

Rick Warren Demonized . . . Huh?

Am I the only one who finds it astoundingly amusing (and by "astoundingly amusing" I mean "dangerously disturbing") that the left is attacking Rick Warren, who they perceive as a conservative cleric, because Obama chose him to spend a few minutes saying an inaugural prayer . . .

But those same liberals defended the 20 years Barack Obama spent under . . . 20 years of spiritual mentorship, marital support, influence and baptism of his children communing with . . . 20 years of hate mongering, racism, anti-American rhetoric through . . . 20 . . . 20 . . . 20 years with this guy?

Christianity Vs. The Reverend Wright

Now here's what I consider a must-read post by Juliette over at baldilocks. It's got scripture. It's got cultural insight. It's got spiritual authenticity. It's got a powerful portrait of Reverend Wright. Oh, and it contains this step-stopping observation: "My own pastor says that God has special plans for shepherds—pastors—who mislead their flocks."

The NAACP Presents: The Rev. Jeremiah Wright

Just when Barack Obama thought it might be safe to focus on quieting his wife's political banter, his spiritual mentor decides to make another public appearance as the keynote speaker at an NAACP fund raiser. The Reverend Jeremiah Wright will be in Detroit on April 27 to deliver what promises to be another blog-erific take on the American condition. I, for one, can't wait, since there is nothing that cures a spat of political writer's block like Rev. Wright at the podium.

Detroit Branch president, The Rev. Wendell Anthony, explained that the decision to invite Wright is intended to spark discussion.

"Rev. Wright has challenged the nation, challenged our comfort zone and stimulated nation-wide discussions on the issues of how we must move forward together as both a nation and a people. We look forward to his participation here in the city of Detroit."
Oh, I'm sure at least Barack Obama's comfort zone will be challenged in the anticipatory days leading up to the event . . . and perhaps for many days afterward. Jeremiah Wright does not seem the type to set aside his convictions for the expediency of politically correct dialogue. You know, I think I may be beginning to like this guy.

Rev. Jeremiah Wrong . . . I Mean, Wright -- Barack Obama's Pastor

Videos of the ole Reverend have been bouncing all over the web so I feel it's my obligation to post one on the Khaki Elephant as well.

The Reverend Jeremiah Wrong . . . I mean, Wright has been Barack Obama's pastor for twenty some years. The senator credits him as the man who led him to Christ (which may make you wonder where the word "led" led). He married the Obamas and baptized their children. He has functioned as their spiritual advisor and mentor for all these years.

So why has Obama suddenly decided to begin criticizing his father in the faith? Why, after sitting in the pews listening to this man for twenty years, has Obama stepped away from his alter? Why is Obama now telling the media that he disagrees with "some" of the things the Reverend Wrong . . . I mean, Wright has to say?

I suppose it has something to do with the public seeing some of the Reverend's sermons for the fist time. So, for your spiritual edification, here is a taste of the preacher Barack Obama felt at home listening to for all those years (This video was posted on YouTube by NASCARTango).
